Welcome from the General Chair
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 8th annual IEEE workshop on Wide-Bandgap (WBG) Power Devices and Applications (WiPDA) sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronic Society (PELS), the IEEE Electron Devices Society, and the Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA).
The IEEE WiPDA has gained great momentum and is growing in both scope and importance. Over the last 7 editions, WiPDA has become one of the key gatherings for the WBG technical community where device scientists, application and system engineers, university professors and students share and exchange information on their recent research findings, report on key results and discuss the main challenges for both Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) based technologies, devices, applications and systems. It also became the home for some of the key face-to-face annual gatherings such as the meetings of both the JEDEC JC-70 committee, responsible for WBG standardization and the International Technology Roadmap for Wide-bandgap (ITRW).
This year we have seen a record number of submitted abstracts at WiPDA 2021 standing at 30% higher than the moving average for the submitted abstracts over the preceding WiPDA workshops and we interpret this as evidence for the increased interest in WBG technologies and the level of research funding from academia, national research laboratories and industry. This aligns well with many WBG products entering the Semiconductor Power Electronics market and with the increased levels of national and regional funding for WBG research and development in Europe, Asia and the US.
This year’s workshop will be fully virtual due to uncertainties associated with COVID-19 and its up and down fluctuating numbers. We had to prioritize the safety of the attendees over our collective wishes to have a face-to-face WiPDA 2021. Nevertheless, we are excited about the technical program based on the quality of paper manuscripts, keynotes, tutorials and panel sessions.
WiPDA 2021 starts on November 7th with a tutorial program consisting of eight-90 minutes sessions running over two parallel tracks and covering both WBG devices and applications for both material systems.
The organizing committee is privileged to invite exceptional keynote speakers of industry leaders from large semiconductor manufacturers, dynamic and fast-emerging startups, academia and national research laboratories. We wanted this key component of WiPDA 2021 to highlight the vision and the direction that industry leaders are projecting, share their high-level roadmaps and their plans for the future.
The technical program is packed with 8 SiC and GaN device and application technical sessions including the newly introduced (to WiPDA) RF GaN and ITRW sessions and will take place over 4 days (November 8-11), highlighting industry trends and technical accomplishments from key industry, academia and research laboratories. In addition, there will be 30 virtual posters spread over two days – November 10-11 – which will enable effective virtual interactions between the authors and attendees and is made possible by a reliable Underline virtual platform.
The program will include an interactive panel discussion on November 8th drawing experts from a variety of industries including energy, automotive, defense, aerospace and industrial sectors.
